First a bit about the Poodle
Most people are well aware of the Retriever traits but many are surprised to learn of the Poodle’s origin. Often they are referred to as a ‘French Poodle’ but their roots are believed to come from Germany or Russia . The name ‘Poodle’ originates from the German word ‘puddeln’ which means ‘to splash in water’. The ‘frou-frou’ cut, that so many of us find to be less than appealing, actually had a very important purpose. The Standard Poodle’s original function was to retrieve water fowl. Their long coats would get caught up in branches in the water and became heavy when wet so much of it was removed to facilitate swimming. Specific areas were kept longer to keep vital organs and joints warm in the cold water. The pom-pom on the end of the tail was used to help the hunter see where the dog was while it was swimming. Later, the Poodle was also used in France to search for truffles and in Russia to pull milk carts. They are also great watchdogs. The Standard Poodle was bred down in size to the Miniature to meet the demand for a smaller sized pet. Miniature Poodles have a reputation of being high-strung, aggressive and yappy. A well bred and raised Miniature Poodle is not like this at all. They are playful, energetic, easily trained, bright eyed, very affectionate and get along great with children.
Our Doodles
Poodles and Retrievers exhibit the same innate behaviors, and have surprisingly similar conformation. We believe this is a major factor in the exceptional results of this crossbreed. They do not have conflicting drives so the behaviors are very consistent throughout our litters. They love to swim, to play in the snow, retrieve, and they love long walks. Even though our dogs are smaller in stature than the Standards, you can expect the same endurance that you would of a 50 or 60lb dog. Although they are a hardy, active dog, they usually do not require a high level of exercise. As long as they are provided a moderate amount of physical activity and lots of attention, they can adapt to almost any lifestyle.
The size of our Miniatures and Mediums is achieved by carefully choosing the parents. Our moms are medium-sized Labradoodles or Goldendoodles, or they are very small Retrievers. We breed our girls to large Miniature Poodles and most of the litters range in the 25 lb to 35 lb range when they are full grown. Although most people initially have a maximum or preferred adult weight in mind when they are searching for a puppy, it is also important to consider the height you are looking for in Miniature or Medium Doodle.
